(NYSP)
2 November 2006
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Malusi Gigaba, together with Eden
(George) Municipality Mayor, Councillor Rudi Laws, will tomorrow, 3 November
2006, graduate 300 young people under the NYSP.
These young people were selected from a pool of almost 2 000 young people
and were trained and paid for their services in the project. There was a
deliberate effort to reflect the demographics of the Eden District, thus the
recruitment covered all racial groups in the area.
In line with the government's effort to ensure proper representation of
women in all sectors of the society, more young women than young men were
recruited.
The young people selected have been trained and assessed in accredited
research techniques and deployed into selected communities.
The programme is a component of the broader government's Accelerated and
Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA), which focuses on skills
development and national orientation targeting young people.
As a member of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on NYSP, Gigaba has been
encouraging a number of municipalities and other government departments to
embark on such programmes.
