Robben Island Museum
10 February 2006
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Malusi Gigaba, will temporarily take
off his ministerial hat and don that of a marriage officer to conduct marriages
on the Robben Island Museum in Cape Town on Valentine's Day, 14 February
2006.
Since the inception of the initiative in 2000, the former prison has been
transformed into a romantic rendezvous on Valentine's Day by couples from all
over the world eager to tie the knot in a unique style. Over 100 marriages have
been conducted at the Museum.
"The Department has deemed it proper to perform this solemn mission at the
Robben Island Museum which, in the past, represented hopelessness but is now an
icon of victory over overwhelming hardships.
"This, we believe, will give courage to the couples who will be entering
into a commitment of marriage to undertake their matrimonial pact within the
same convictions demonstrated by revolutionaries who were once incarcerated on
the Island," says Deputy Minister Gigaba.
The deadline for registration is today, 10 February 2006. Members of the
media are reminded that there are limited seats on the boat to the Island and
remaining tickets will be issued on a first come first serve basis.
