Deputy Minister Gigaba to address the launch of the African
Chapter of the International Association of Refugee Law Judges (IARLJ)

The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Malusi Gigaba, will on Tuesday, 26
September 2006, address the official launch of the IARLJ at the Union
Buildings, in Pretoria.

The IARLJ has three chapters, one in the Americas, one in Europe and one in
Australia/ New Zealand. It has been the association's long held aim to
establish a chapter for Africa. The association's core function is to provide
training in refugee law decision making to judges through workshops, chapter
conferences and a bi-annual world conference. The Africa chapter of the IARLJ
will seek to further the objectives of the association, through the
co-operation and the exchange of information and expertise on asylum and
refugee law, procedures and decision-making among states in Africa.

About 25 judges and senior officials from African states are set to attend
the launch, which will be followed by a two-day workshop aimed at enforcing a
consistent understanding of refugee law throughout the world.
