that rectification of Extension 44 houses will be complete before
relocation
25 July 2006
The Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing today stated that it
was confident that all necessary rectifications on Extension 44 houses in
Polokwane would be completed by the time the relocations from Disteneng
informal settlement near Seshego begin early next month.
Several hundred residents of Disteneng will be moving into new low-income
houses by 6 August 2006.
The Department said it was certain that the deficiencies at the 148 units in
Extension 44, which were proactively identified by the Department, the
Polokwane Municipality and the National Homebuilders Regulatory Council
(NHBRC), would be corrected by the deadline. Fifty houses of the 148 units have
already been rectified and the remainder will be completed in the coming two
weeks.
Having identified the weaknesses in the structures, a meeting was held in
early June 2006 with all stakeholders - including the Polokwane Municipality -
to discuss how the contractors would remedy the problems. A joint inspection by
stakeholders was also undertaken. A snag list was then compiled and given to
the contractors for rectification.
The Department is currently working closely with the contractor and the
Polokwane Municipality to ensure that the process of relocation to safe houses
with the requisite basic services is smooth and well co-ordinated.
