Men take a stand on violence against women and children
abuse

12 November 2007

During this year's 16 Days of Activism launch, under the theme: 'Act against
violence' men and boys from all over the country will literally take a stand
against violence against women and children. This will be evident when they
will take the streets during Million Men's March (MMM). The aim of the MMM is
to encourage fathers to instil morals and values in their boy children. The boy
children must be taught from an early age that women are to be respected.

Rape, child abuse and domestic violence are some of the serious crimes that
continue to negatively affect the society. Research indicates that a child who
on a daily basis experience abuse at home is likely to grow up believing that
the abuse he/she experienced is the way of life. This kid will do the same
thing when growing up.

The 16 Days of Activism on 'No Violence against Women and Children' is an
annual campaign, founded by the United Nations. The campaign starts from the 25
November to 10 December. The campaign is but a one element of government's
year-long, integrated and cross-sectoral drive to eliminate the abuse of women
and children.

Since 1999 the South African government has committed itself to overcoming
violence against women and children by passing and enforcing laws that ensure
safe-guarding of women and children's human rights and emphasised on
prosecution of perpetrators.

Most abuse cases take place in the hands of male figures, in homes and
families. However organisations such as Munna ndi nnyi? Continue to urge all
men to protect women and children. They always say, "Real men never abuse their
women and children," Munna ndi nnyi?, like all other organisations against
abuse call for communities to assist in exposing all offenders. Cases of abuse
may be reported to local police stations, at schools, churches, through social
workers and other community structures.

The event will be held as follows:
