Limpopo Provincial Government will host a conference on ritual killings from
16 to 18 November 2006. The conference to be held in Vhembe District will end
with a rally. The main aim of the event is to create awareness and strengthen
the fight against ritual killings in the province.
The Limpopo Premier, Mr Sello Moloto, will give the opening address. Dr
Mathole Motshekga of Kara Heritage Institute will be the chairperson of a
commission that will be focusing on culture and traditions and how they
influence ritual killing. Professor Marcus Ramogale of the University of Venda
will lead a commission on role of communities in combating ritual killings
while Professor Victor Ralushai will also give presentation on cultural and
traditional practices and how they influence ritual murders.
Joyce Piliso-Seroke of the Commission for Gender Equality will present on
gender dimensions in the practice of ritual murders. There will be a video
documentary on ritual killings shown at the conference. South African Council
of Churches will present on religion, morality and belief systems and their
impact on ritual killings.
The theme of the conference is, "United against ritual killings in realising
the age of hope."
Community members from all corners of the province are invited to the rally.
The rally will be characterised by entertainment from both local and national
music, including traditional dancing.
