CLaRA workshop for Limpopo House of traditional leaders

22 June 2006

The Department of Land Affairs will conduct a workshop for Limpopo House of
Traditional Leaders on 23 June 2006 at the Ranch Protea Hotel in Polokwane. The
workshop starts at 10h00.

The Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Ms Lulu Xingwana, will no
longer address the workshop as was previously expected. The house of
traditional leaders will now be addressed by the Dr Sipho Sibanda, Chief
Director: Policy and Legislative Development.

The meeting will among other issues, discuss the role of traditional leaders
in the government’s political economy including their functions and
responsibilities regarding the implementation of the Communal Land Rights Act
(CLaRA), 2004 (Act. No. 11 of 2004).

The purpose of CLaRA is to give secure land tenure rights to communities and
persons who occupy and use land that the apartheid government had reserved for
occupation by the African people known as communal areas. The land tenure
rights available to the people living in communal areas are largely based on
customary law or insecure permits granted under laws that were applied to
African people alone. These rights do not have legal status and the holders of
such rights cannot use them to enter the financial markets.

Your presence will be highly appreciated.
