In line with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and other
relevant labour laws, workers within the taxi industry will now be entitled to
the prescribed hikes in their minimum wages, as stipulated in the sectoral
determination.
As from the beginning of this month, the wages for drivers and
administrative staff will increase from R1 432,35 to R1 552,66 per month, Rank
Marshals from R1 145,88 to R1 242,13 per month, while the wages for general
workers such as fare collectors, and cleaners will increase from R1 002,65 to
R1 086,87 per month. The increase is based on the May Consumer Price Index
excluding interest rates on mortgage bonds (CPIX), plus 2%.
Working hours were set at 48 hours per week, with a compulsory resting
period of at least 12 hours per day for drivers, and 36 continuous hours per
week.
Meanwhile, the Department has issued a notice requesting interested parties
to submit their inputs regarding minimum wages and conditions of employment for
the sector. The current sectoral determination will expire in June 2008.
