agenda
19 July 2006
A delegation of Cuban government officials is currently touring South
Africa, with skills empowerment - particularly among youth and the unemployed â
high on the agenda.
The 12-day expedition, which commenced on Monday, 17 July, entails exchange
of expertise on wide-ranging areas including community training and job
creation between government officials of the two countries.
Among prominent bodies scheduled to meet with the Cuban delegation in
various parts of the country are officials of the Nedlac, the National Skills
Authority, several Sector Education and Training Authorities, and the Umsobomvu
Youth Fund.
Poverty alleviation projects such as the Expanded Public Works Programme,
the Zonderwater pilot project for ex-prisonersâ rehabilitation, as well as the
ODI learnership for parolees and probationers are some of the ventures that
will be inspected.
The sound working relations between the two countries have resulted in the
two labour departments exchanging training programmes on several occasions.
The most recent of these exchanges was last year when a group of South
African labour inspectors visited Cuba for training on furthering their
expertise on high quality inspection of high risk areas.
The tour is scheduled to end on 28 July.
