Labour on security guards killed by lions

Two men killed by lions, employers face prosecution

16 August 2006

The employers of the two security guards who were mauled by lions at a Free
State game farm last week will face criminal charges if the Department of
Labour has its way.

Following the completion of its investigations into the tragedy, the
Department has decided to refer its findings as well as recommendations for
prosecution against the victims’ employers to the Public Prosecutor.

The guards, one employed by the owner of the Farm Game Lodge near Hennenman,
and the other by a security company, were attacked by the two beasts which had
escaped from their enclosure about seven kilometres from Hennenman. Their
bodies were found at the farm shortly after the attack last Wednesday, 9
August.

Investigations by the Department’s inspectors in terms of the Occupational
Heath and Safety Act revealed that both employers contravened the law by not
ensuring that the working environment was healthy and safe for the workers.
