Labour on Provincial Security Summit, 16 Mar

High prevalence of exploitation in the security sector

15 March 2007

The consistently high level of complaints about the Basic Conditions of
Employment Act in the private security sector in KwaZulu-Natal has prompted the
holding of a Provincial Security Summit to take place for the first time in
Durban tomorrow (16 March 2007).

Unfair dismissal cases themselves over the past year that were dealt with by
the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in the
province amount to 2 255, an average of 205 cases per month.

The summit, organised by the Labour Department in collaboration with the
CCMA, aims to establish a provincial forum that will monitor the implementation
of a compliance strategy to be developed.

Key representatives from business, unions, workers, employer and service
organisations, industry regulators and government are expected to attend.
