Labour on prosecution of Viscoil Oil Company

Department of labour recommend prosecution

18 April 2007

Prosecution has been recommended against Viscoil Oil Company in Centurion
after one worker died in the line of duty. A prohibition notice halting all the
company operations was also issued.

Preliminary investigations by the department inspectors revealed that an
employee was filling the drum with engine oil, while other fellow employees
were working outside performing other duties. It is alleged that the drum burst
while he was busy performing his assigned task, resulting in the cover of the
drum hitting him in the head and killing him instantly.

The department also established that there was no risk assessment or safety
procedures conducted.
