Labour on payments for Compensation for Occupational Injuries and
Diseases Act

R1 billion for Compensation for Occupational Injuries and
Diseases Act

18 July 2006

A staggering amount in excess of R1 billion was injected into medical
providers' accounts as payment for Compensation for Occupational Injuries and
Diseases Act (Coida) during 2005 to 2006 financial year, Acting Compensation
Commissioner, Mr Phineas Mothiba, said today.

Mothiba said over R738 million of this amount was paid to hospitals, R96
million to radiologists and R71 million to general practitioners.

While tabling the Compensation Fund’s expenditure on Coida matters, Mothiba
also seized an opportunity to present Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana’s
increases of four percent in all Coida medical tariffs.

“Coida tariffs are the maximum amount allocated to medical procedures and
consultations offered by health care providers on workers who have sustained
injuries or diseases as a result of the duties they are employed to perform,”
he said.

Before the increase could be confirmed, the Compensation Fund consulted with
the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), Business Unity South
Africa (BUSA) as well as the two Mutual Associations (Rand Mutual and Fema) and
all parties agreed on the four percent increase, he said.
