Labour on Nelspruit office shut down

Department of Labour office shuts down

19 April 2007

The Department of Labour office in Nelspruit (Mpumalanga) has been
temporarily shut down by inspectors after it was found to be posing a serious
hazard to the workers.

A probation notice halting all the activities was issued after inspectors
conducted investigations. The prohibition notice was issued based on the
following reasons:
* Bad smell of something that has died inside the building and is trapped in
the ceiling.
* A water leak from the ceiling leading to water running into the
offices.
* The office has also been infested with breeding mosquitoes.

The shut down happened after numerous attempts were made to alert the
national Department of Public Works to correct the abnormalities.

"To ensure service delivery to our clients was not hindered, the Nelspruit
Labour Centre has deployed two Mobile Units to service the clients
temporarily," departmental spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said.

Adding that a part-time office has also been opened in Hazyview and White
River for a longer period with an aim of directing some of the clients there.
Neighbouring labour centres are also assisting.
