Labour inspectors probes car plant fatality

Labour inspectors to probe car plant fatality

23 January 2006

The Department of Labour will today (Monday) commence with investigations
into the fatal accident in which two construction workers were killed at the
Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape last Friday.

All production was halted at the plant on the Departments command
immediately after the accident, pending the outcome of the companys internal
investigations.

The two men, who were reportedly working for a private construction company,
fell while apparently not wearing safety harnesses, as required for high-risk
operations.

The Department of Labour has ordered a swift and thorough investigation into
the matter, and has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased
workers.
