compliance
31 January 2007
The level of compliance in the domestic sector in Pretoria and surrounding
areas will tomorrow, Thursday, 1 February 2007, fall under the sharp focus of
labour inspectors as they will be clamping down on violators of laws governing
the sector.
The inspectors will focus mainly on the employees' registration with the
Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), compliance with the set minimum wages and
other working conditions in their (domestic workers) respective workplaces.
As the inspections will be unfolding in the north of Gauteng areas, Minister
of Labour, Mr Membathisi Mdladlana, will be meeting domestic workers in Cape
Town interacting with them on their day-to-day workplace challenges
particularly those related with wages and working conditions.
In December last year the government stipulated a R1 066,90 monthly wage
increase for domestic employees working for more than 27 hours per week in
urban areas (also known as area A), while those in rural areas received a
R865,54 wage.
