The Department of Labour in the Eastern Cape has today embarked on a week
long blitz inspections checking on compliance with the Domestic, Wholesale and
Retail, Forestry and Farm Workers sectoral determinations, in the Kouga and
Koukama regions of Port Elizabeth.
The inspections will run as from today (16 April) until 20 April.
The current inspections came after the department conducted inspections in
the construction industry, in which 220 construction sites were visited. At
least 123 employers were found not to be complying with the labour law and that
only a minimum of 97 employers were complying. This has seen 121 contravention
notices, and nine prohibition notices served during the blitz. The department
further urges employers to co-operate with the inspectors during these
inspection visits.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labour in conjunction with Commission for
Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration will be conducting advocacy sessions
during 17 to 19 April with specific attention to the sectors mentioned
above.
All employers and employees are invited to attend these sessions.
