Labour to host road show on UIF registration, 12 Aug

Workers urged to be whistleblowers

25 July 2006

The Department of Labour has today urged workers to report their employers
if they suspect or have evidence that they have not been registered with the
Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

The Department says it is always advisable for workers to check and ensure
that they have been registered with the UIF. The Fund has currently registered
more than 7 million workers in both the domestic and the business sectors.

The Unemployment Insurance Act compels all employers not only to register
with the Fund, but also to ensure that workers in their employment are
registered with the Fund.

Labour spokesman Mokgadi Pela warned that it was unlawful not to comply with
the legislation aimed at protecting the most vulnerable workers and extending
social protection to ordinary people.

“We want to thank all those hundreds of thousands of domestic and commercial
employers who have seen the importance of registering with the UIF. We are
however, still concerned with those who still have not registered their
employees,” he said.

Non-compliance constitutes an offence punishable by a fine plus interest or
imprisonment or both.

Pela said the UIF had embarked on a national road show to educate
stakeholders not only on the importance of registering with the Fund, but also
on knowing your rights as a worker and obligations as an employer.

“The road shows present our clients with an opportunity to interact on a
personal level with the officials of the UIF,” he added.
