Western Cape to accelerate skills rollout

2 March 2006

The Department of Labour is to host two National Skills Development Strategy
(NSDS) workshops in the Western Cape province on Monday and Friday (6 and 10
March).

The two gatherings in Cape Town and George respectively, are part of a
programme that fast tracks the rollout of NSDS 2005-10 around the country.

Last week these events took place in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal
provinces.

The NSDS 2005-10 was launched in March last year by Labour Minister
Membathisi Mdladlana as an extension of NSDS 2001-05, a skills empowerment
drive that has already brought skills to approximately 100 000 mostly young
people nationwide in various sectors over the past five years.

A projected R21,9 billion income from the skills development levy has been
allocated for skills development over the period 2005-10.
