UIF focuses on fraud prevention

5 September 2006

All is set for the Tshwane leg of the on-going public awareness and
education drive on issues pertaining to the workings of the Unemployment
Insurance Fund (UIF). The campaign which is a partnership between the
Department of Labour and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)
Education will be conducted in Mamelodi, east of Tshwane, on Saturday.

Thousands of UIF clients from across Tshwane are expected to attend this
outdoor community outreach programme to be held in Moretele Park, a popular
jazz venue in Gauteng.

The campaign trail which is intended to raise awareness and to educate the
public on the offerings and services of the UIF has already been to seven
provinces and has proved to be a huge success with members of the public
attending in large numbers.

Acting Unemployment Insurance Commissioner, Boas Seruwe said: “The focus of
the Tshwane leg of the campaign will be on fraud prevention. We want to educate
the public that it is fraudulent to continue to receive UIF payments even after
finding new employment. We call this work and draw.”

“You can be made to pay for those extra payments and in worst case scenario
be prevented from receiving any future payments from the UIF,” he added.

The Department also encouraged workers in the domestic sector and their
employers as well taxi operators to attend this event and learn more about
their rights and obligations.

The UIF full service including registration as employers and application for
benefits would be offered on the day of the event.
