Labour on Farmers Union and government relations

Farmers Union and government foster relations

3 October 2007

Contravention of labour laws, injuries and deaths of farm workers as well as
their ruthless evictions, will now become a thing of the past, following the
recent collaboration of the Department of Labour, Land Affairs Department and
the North West Farmers Union.

Zolisa Sigabi spokesperson for the Department of Labour said: "The
department saw it fit to foster these relations with employers for better
working relations. We already have good working relations with Agri-SA."

She said it remains the duty of labour, other government institutions, and
farmers to protect vulnerable workers and ensure workers rights are not
violated.

Investigations by the Department of Labour inspectors revealed that most
contraventions related to child labour, assault by employers and working under
hazardous conditions. More than fifty percent of workers in the province are
employed in farms.
