The Department of Labour has extended by almost three weeks investigations
into the fatal accident which left three building construction employees dead
at the Volkswagen car plant in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape on 30 May.
Investigators commenced with preliminary inquiries yesterday, Tuesday, but
agreed to allow the construction company Grinaker LTA until 20 June to submit
the required information.
A formal investigation in terms of section 31 of the Occupational Health and
Safety Act is scheduled to resume from 3 to 6 July.
The three Grinaker LTA employees and their colleagues were working at a
construction site at Volkswagen premises when the accident occurred.
It is believed that components of a crane that they were dismantling
collapsed resulting in them getting trapped in the debris.
The Department of Labour has since ordered a halt to all operations at the
site until investigations have been completed.
