Labour on death threats against inspectors

Employer intimidates Department of Labour (DoL)
inspectors

The Department of Labour condemns in everyway possible way death threats
directed at its inspector and family by a construction employer who was
refusing to accept a prohibition notice for not complying with construction
regulations.

DoL's Occupational Health and Safety Inspector based at Botshabelo Labour
Centre near Bloemfontein in Free State, was conducting at inspection to
Faroncor Construction in Botshabelo as part of the nationwide construction
blitz inspections taking place this week.

The contractor was issued with a prohibition notice to stop work after
failing to comply with construction regulations relating to excavations. He
refused to accept the notice and went on to threaten the inspector and his
family with death.

A case of intimidation was lodged at the local police after the prohibition
notice was handed to the Employer under protection of the South African Police
Service (SAPS).
