Labour to conduct public hearings on private security sector, 5 - 9
Oct

Better working environment hopes abound as security workers
have say

4 October 2006

Improved working conditions in the private security sector will be high on
the minds of many, as stakeholders will be airing their views at public
hearings conducted by the Department of Labour this week.

The hearings at various centres throughout the country form part of the
department's efforts to establish sound employment conditions, including the
minimum wage, working hours and leave accruement in the private security
industry.

The hearings will give employers, unions, and other interested parties an
opportunity to make an input into this process that will make it possible for
the majority of unrepresented workers in the sector to participate. Currently
only a small percentage of security workers are represented by trade
unions.

Participants will be expected to prepare and give submissions to influence
the final draft of the legislation. The department invites all stakeholders to
attend the gathering, which will also be open to the media.
