(UIF) claimants

In a show of absolute determination, crooks have seemingly intensified their
activities in trying to defraud potential Unemployment Insurance Fund claimants
out of their money this time directly approaching the Fund with details of
unsuspecting qualifiers falsely pretending to be representing them.
The past two weeks has seen no less that 20 suspicious telephone calls from
people using details of employees trying to apply for benefits.
On the other hand, concerned workers and employers have also been inundating
UIF offices with calls trying to verify the authenticity of officials who are
targeting them at their workplaces.
Among the tricks used are requests for employers to deposit their workers'
contributions into a certain bank account number. One employer was asked to
deposit the money into this account number: 0764010628.
The UIF today (Friday) warned the public to be on the lookout for people
requesting their personal details for UIF purposes and immediately report them
to nearby police or Labour offices.
UIF spokesperson Kgomotso Sebetso said workers would only be required to
provide their details by their employers and when claiming for their benefits
at the nearest labour centres.
"A genuine Labour official will always carry with them the necessary
documentation, including registration forms and anyone without such proof
should not be provided with any information. The public should always know that
UIF contribution payments are only made electronically into the Fund's
contribution account or by a direct deposit at a First National Bank branch,"
Sebetso said.
The UIF call centre can also be contacted on (012) 337 1680 for further
information.
