visits the Land Claims Court

3 October 2006

The Judge President of the Land Claims Court, the Honourable Mr Justice
Fikile Bam invites members of the media to a briefing session on the occasion
of the visit to the Land Claims Court by the Minister for Agriculture and Land
Affairs, Ms Lulu Xingwana.

During the visit the Minister will present a list of approved assessors for
the Land Claims Court and also inform the Judge President about the intention
of the Chief Land Claims Commissioner, Mr Tozi Gwanya, of the latter's
intention to enter into an agency agreement with the Legal Aid Board.

Assessors' roles and responsibilities are among others, to assist the Land
Claims Court at contested hearings and also help in the ruling by the court on
restoration before final determination of claim.

The agency agreement is an attempt to assist the poor to have access to
legal aid, in compliance with section 29 (4) of the Restitution Act, which
provides that where a party cannot afford to pay for legal representation
itself, the Chief Land Claims Commissioner may take steps to arrange legal
