L Xingwana on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Committee meeting with
China

The South African Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs,
Lulama Xingwana, on the 3rd Sanitary and Phytosanitary Committee meeting with
Li Changjiang and Fan Xiaojian

18 December 2006

On 12 December 2006, the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs in South
Africa, Ms Lulama Xingwana, co-chaired the 3rd Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS)
Committee meeting with Minister Li Changjiang of the Administration of Quality
Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in the People's Republic of China, and
Vice-Minister Fan Xiaojian.

Key issues for discussion were protocols on the export of table grapes and
tobacco from South Africa to China, protocols on the export of apples and pears
from China to South Africa, and aquaculture and fisheries.

At a technical level, an agreement has been reached on the two protocols and
will follow the legislative processes between the two countries for
finalisation and implementation. The two Ministers have also agreed on projects
that will be considered in the next meeting to be held in the first half of
2007 in South Africa. These include goats, pet food and other commodities.

On aquaculture, good progress has been made; the two Ministers agreed on a
plan of action that will include exchange of expertise and information, and
training of South Africans in aquaculture. South Africa will benefit from the
experience of China which has developed the industry over many years. To date
greater freshwater fish is produced in China than marine fish.
