Minister Xingwana to launch rural women association

30 January 2007

The Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Ms Luluma Xingwana will
address a two-day workshop to launch the Western Cape association of Women in
Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD) this week.

Minister Xingwana officially launched the national structure of WARD in
October 2006 in the Eastern Cape Province. WARD is a broad-based mass movement
for women aimed at serving all rural women, in their diversity, to address and
actively participates in land and agrarian reform within a context of their
socio-economic development.

The launch of WARD in the Western Cape comes at the time South Africa is
preparing to host the 4th World Congress on Rural Women scheduled for 23-26
April 2007 at the Durban Convention Centre. Delegates from around the world
will come together for the largest rural women's conference ever held on the
African continent.

Provincial WARD chapters developed out of resolutions from the National
Rural Women Summit held in Durban in August 2006. Participants, (rural women in
particular) were able to learn and share their experiences and develop new
strategies on working with rural development
