The Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Lulu Xingwana, invites the
media to the cocktail dinner to bid farewell to 15 South African youth to
China, Beijing. The chosen students will be in Beijing for a six-month
programme in which they will be trained in all jewellery making processes.
An on the job training will be offered by Michael Diamonds, a Beijing based
jewellery company. This comes after several discussions between the Department
and this company, and the signing of an agreement between the two countries the
Deputy Ministerâs official visit to China on 17 November 2005. The agreement is
based on co-operative relation that South Africa enjoys with China.
The programme is aimed at helping to fast-track South Africaâs vision of
developing a skilled class of jewellery manufacturers and entrepreneurs who
will participate meaningfully in the industry. Michael Diamonds will develop
the skills of trainees at its own costs. The company has also undertaken to
cover costs for technology transfer for the benefit of the trainees when they
return to South Africa.
