agenda
10 October 2006
The Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Ms Lulu Xingwana, cordially
invites members of the media to a three-day conference of rural women involved
in agriculture, land and development to be held in the Eastern Cape Province
from 13 - 15 October.
The conference, which will be held under the theme "Mobilisation of Rural
Women," is part of South Africa's preparations towards the World Congress of
Rural Women scheduled to take place in our country early next year.
The conference will culminate in the launch of an association of Women in
Agriculture, Land and Rural Development (WARD) on Sunday, 15 October to
coincide with world-wide celebrations of the International Rural Women's
Day.
The International Rural Women's Day is an important day in the world rural
development agenda. Celebrated yearly, it is a day the world acknowledges the
role rural women play in the social, economic and political fabric of our
lives; a day the world pays tribute to the fortitude and resilience of rural
women against a kaleidoscope of insurmountable-looking challenges, their
agility and propensity to embrace changes against the backdrop of a changing
yet not sufficiently accommodating rural landscape; it is a day rural women
themselves come together to identify and address the challenges they face daily
as rural women.
Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Mrs Zanele Mbeki, Cabinet
Ministers as well as Ministers from Namibia, Senegal, Mozambique and Zimbabwe
are expected to attend and address the conference.
The details of the conference are as follows:
Date: 13 - 15 October 2006
Time: 08h00 - 22h00, except on Sunday when the conference will close at
13h00
