Linda Nghatsane is the 2006 Female Farmer of the Year award winner. The
Mpumalanga based farmer was declared the overall winner of the eighth annual
edition at a glittering ceremony held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
The farmer from the Abundant Life Skills project based at Farm de Hoop was
chosen from 34 other finalists from across the nine provinces. Having also won
in the category Top Producer for Informal Markets, she walked away with a total
of R65 000 in prize money.
Her farm has a total of four poultry houses constructed to house 3 800
chickens. She also produces oyster mushrooms, strawberries and variety of
vegetables sold in Nelspruit and its surrounds.
The other winners are Ms Jeanne Groenewald, Top Producer for National
Markets and Ubuhle Bamanguni Garden Project, Top Producer for Household Use. Ms
Rodene Lambrecht and Ms Martha Mulaudzi were joint winners in the Top Producer
for Export Markets category. They each walked away with R35 000.
Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Ms Lulu Xingwana announced that
next year's event will be hosted by the Mpumalanga province on 31 August.
