Western Cape Minister for Community Safety Leonard Ramatlakane has welcomed
an initiative by the South African Police Service to increase police visibility
through the deployment of additional vehicles. 65 new vehicles marked and
branded with the South African Police Service logos were released today and
were paraded to the public in the city of Cape Town.

The vehicles were today handed to the Bellville, Cape Town Central, Sea
Point and Woodstock police stations. Speaking at the official handover
ceremony, Minister Ramatlakane said, "This initiative is commended as it
assists our men and women at these stations to increase their capacity to do
their work of delivering a service to our communities."

Minister Ramatlakane added that, "through this initiative we want our
policemen and women to be able to get to assist members of our public and also
attend to complaints from the public. At times the response by our police
stations that there were no vehicles to attend to complaints has not been
satisfying to the public and what we are now doing is addressing that
challenge."

Minister Ramatlakane thanked and commended the police who have been
proactive despite a lack of resources at some station but still managed to
respond to complaints, and apprehend criminals. Minister also commended the
police and in particular members of the Khayelitsha community for working in
partnership in the search of the 11 week old baby Yolanda Yoba who was
allegedly kidnapped by an unknown woman and were found in Mpumalanga on Sunday.
The unknown woman was arrested and appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's
court.

"I want to commend the Khayelitsha community for the manner in which they
supported the police and Department's Child Rapid Response Unit in the search
of the baby until she was found. Working in such a partnership yields positive
breakthroughs such as this and is a confirmation that crime can be overcome
when working in partnership," said Minister Ramatlakane.
