the TauTona Mine

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, has expressed
her sadness at the loss of three lives during the seismic event that occurred
at the TauTona Mine in Carletonville on 10 January 2006.
âI am concerned about the accident and would like to pass my sincere
condolences to the bereaved families. A loss of one life is one too many and
the Department will continue with the research we are doing on seismic
activities. We are also eagerly awaiting recommendations by the International
Panel established to look into seismic activities,â said the Minister.
Inspectors from the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate have commenced with
a Section 60 investigation and are underground for an inspection in loco. An
inquiry into the accident will commence on Thursday, 12 January 2006.
The Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Lulu Xingwana, will visit the
mine on Thursday, 12 January 2005, at 14:00 for a briefing and also to visit
one of workerâs who sustained injuries and is still in hospital.
