The Premier's Sport Awards 2006 will take place on 30 November 2006, at the
International Convention Centre (ICC), commencing at 18h30.
In keeping with our efforts to host the biggest sporting event in Africa,
the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup 2010,
our theme this year is "Lasuka Lahlala 2010."
This annual sports awards function, an initiative of the Department of Sport
and Recreation, is in its eighth year and serves to acknowledge the talent and
achievements of the most outstanding sporting personalities in
KwaZulu-Natal.
While the ceremony acknowledges our high achievers in the province,
recognition is also given to the contribution made by communities and
municipalities towards the upliftment of sport and recreation from grass roots
level to excellence.
The Department of Sport and Recreation, in its effort to lend credibility to
this event, has aptly called it the "Premier's Sports Awards" in honour of its
first citizen, the Premier of the province, Mr JS Ndebele, thus making it a
prestigious award.
The highlights of the evening's programme include the Premier's keynote
address, exciting entertainment and the announcement of the winners in all
nominated categories.
The MEC for Sport and Recreation, Mr A Rajbansi, will also be host to other
guests, amongst them, foreign ambassadors, national department representatives,
provincial MECs of Sport, Presidents of Sports Federations and business
leaders.
Springbok Rugby captain, John Smith, former Proteas cricket captain, Shaun
Pollock, New York City Marathon winner, Willie Mtolo, boxing legends, Tap Tap
Makhathini and Joe "Axe Killer" Ngidi, Olympians, Penny Heyns and Terrence
Parkins, hockey talent, Marsha Marescia, football legend, Dharam Mohan, tennis
champions, Wesley Moodie and Liezel Huber, Banyana Banyana's Veronica Phewa,
and South Africa (SA) Netball's, Cindy Gumede, have been past recipients of the
Premier's Sports Awards.
It is hoped that the massive efforts by the new Department of Sport and
Recreation will lead to high performance and world class excellence.
