KwaZulu-Natal to host International Conference for traditional leaders,
25 to 26 Oct

Traditional leaders meet to discuss their role in the United
Nations, African Union and Southern African Development Community.

Hundreds of traditional leaders and monarchs from Africa and across the
globe will on 25 to 26 October 2007, gather in Durban, South Africa to discuss
ways of catapulting the institution of traditional leadership into the global
arena and ensure that it takes its rightful place in world's multi-lateral
forums such as the United Nations, African Union and Southern African
Development Community (SADC).

The 1st International Conference on "Global perspective on Traditional and
Indigenous Leadership", organised under the auspices of the KwaZulu-Natal
Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, will be attended by
kings, queens, traditional leaders, academics, researchers, experts on issues
of traditional leadership and democracy, non-governmental organisations (NGO),
community-based organisations (CBO), government ministers, members of
parliament, chief executive officers, government officials responsible for
traditional leaders from the continent of Africa and other parts of the
world.

The conference is in line with the African Renaissance vision which seeks to
ensure that Africa is elevated into the centre stage of global affairs in all
spheres of life.

The conference provides a platform for traditional leaders to share
experiences and establish forums of engagement so that this critical organ of
governance (traditional leadership) can be elevated into its rightful
place.

Topics for discussion:

1. Co-existence of traditional leadership and democracy
2. Contemporary experience in traditional governance
3. Legislative imperative and government participation in matters relating to
traditional institutions
4. Succession and leadership dispute resolutions
5. Traditional leadership and gender
6. Participation of traditional leadership in Pan African institutions and
world multilateral institutions: such as the United Nations, African Union, and
SADC etc.
7. Traditional leadership role in economic development.
