The Provincial Gender Machinery of KwaZulu-Natal will on Tuesday, 29 August
2006, visit the Abathwa Women at Drakensberg, Mpofana Municipality, as part of
its programme to commemorate August as Women's Month.
Last week, 22 August 2006, the provincial gender machinery, led by the First
Lady of KwaZulu-Natal, Mrs Zama Ndebele, accompanied by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for
Arts and Culture, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, Head of Department for Community Safety and
Liaison, Mrs Yasmin Bacus, and other women in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial
Legislature visited New Hanover Female Correctional Centre to hand over sewing
machines and different sports and recreation equipment to the women serving
time in this correctional facility.
The purpose of tomorrow's visit will be to devote increased attention to
issues affecting vulnerable women and to identify key issues and ways in which
they can be addressed. It will further provide necessary support based on the
challenges they face. The visit will also be used as information sessions that
will enlighten the women with services provided by different provincial
government departments in order to help them improve their lives.
The provincial gender machinery comprises of the Office on the Status of
Women within the Office of the Premier; Committee on the Quality of Life and
the Status of Women, Children, Youth and People with Disabilities; Provincial
Parliamentary Women's Caucus; Provincial Gender Forum; Commission on Gender
Equality; Public Service Commission; Commission for the Promotion and
Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic communities;
Independent Electoral Commission; South African Human Rights Commission, and
community-based organisations dealing with gender.
Members of the media are invited to attend. The visits will take place as
follows:
