Due to the ongoing strike action the environment at our schools, adult based
education and training (ABET) centres and Further Education Training (FET)
colleges is not conducive to writing examinations. Therefore the Department of
Education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has issued instructions to suspend all
examinations until after the conclusion of the strike. We reassure our learners
and parents at our schools, ABET centres and FET colleges that learners will be
given an opportunity to write their examinations under normal circumstances.
Nobody needs to fear that their chances to succeed will be jeopardised by the
current strike action.
Regarding the safety of our learners and teachers, which is of prime concern
to the department, the Head of Department has delegated the power to close
schools to principals as an interim measure for the duration of the strike. All
principals must exercise their discretion in consultation with school governing
bodies, taking into account the safety and security of their learners and
teachers and inform the Head of Department in writing of their decision. The
department is monitoring the ongoing strike very closely.
