KwaZulu-Natal Education on maternity leave for school girls

Statement by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Education on
maternity leave for school girls

2 November 2006

It will be premature for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education to
comment on the issue of maternity leave for school girls as the Council of
Education Ministers is currently in the process of drafting a policy on teenage
pregnancy.

We need to point out that the issue was raised by a member of the public at
the Teenage Pregnancy Summit, a consultative forum organised by the KZN
Department of Education to get input from the public. We believe that teenage
pregnancy is a social matter that needs to be addressed by all parties.
Therefore we invited amakhosi, izinduna, teachers, parents, religious leaders
and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to express their opinions on the
matter at the forum, which would guide us in drafting a teenage pregnancy
policy.
