Launch of project to assist HIV and AIDS educators

22 March 2006

Worrying anecdotal reports indicating that educators seem to be leaving
schools in large numbers urged the Education Labour Relations Council to
commission a study to investigate the validity of these anecdotal reports.

HIV and AIDS among educators was one of the seven reports produced. Based on
a nationally representative sample of educators, who gave oral sample or blood
specimen for HIV testing it was found that 12.7 percent of the teachers are HIV
positive. The highest number of HIV cases among educators was found in
KwaZulu-Natal (21.8 percent).

To address these challenges the prevention, care and treatment access
project was put together. KwaZulu-Natal Education Superintendent-General, Dr
Cassius Lubisi, will launch this partnership between the national Education
Department, KwaZulu-Natal Education Department and the teacher unions
tomorrow.
