National Women’s Day

8 August 2006

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Government will celebrate the National
Women's Day in Durban tomorrow, (9 August), under the theme "South African
Women Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow".

This year's National Women's Day marks the 50th anniversary of the Women's
anti-pass march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 where the
women, from all walks of life, declared that: "We shall not rest until we have
won for our children their fundamental rights of freedom, justice and
equality."

The 50th anniversary will also afford our country and our province an
opportunity to focus attention on what have been accomplished in the past 12
years of freedom and democracy, and how much more still needs to be done to
emancipate our women.

The proceedings of the day will start with the re-enactment of the march
from Durban City hall at 9 am and proceed to the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium
where the marchers will hand over a memorandum to Premier Sibusiso Ndebele. The
KZN march will be tele-linked to the national march in Pretoria.

The formal programme will resume at 11 am at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium and
will feature women veterans of the historic 1956 march and provincial
leadership. The Premier will deliver a keynote address.

The crowd will be treated to live performances by South Africa's renowned
artists Thandiswa Mazwai, Deborah Fraser and Maskandi group Imithente.
