The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet has noted with great concern reports that Inkosi
Mpiyezintombi Mzimela has prohibited social functions from taking place in his
area, including marriages and burials during Saturdays.
Inkosi Mzimela is said to belong to a religious group that worships on
Saturdays.
"We note with great concern the actions of Inkosi Mpiyezintombi Mzimela on
this matter. Our Constitution guarantees every South African the right to
religious freedom. But this should not impinge on the rights of others. The
people of KwaZulu-Natal must get married and bury their loved ones on any day
they want and they shall be protected by the law," the Cabinet statement
says.
The Cabinet statement says, if need be, government would be prepared to
intervene in the matter.
