KwaZulu-Natal on Cabinet meeting

KwaZulu-Natal on weekly Cabinet meeting

8 August 2007

The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet today (Wednesday, 8 August 2007) met with members
of the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) for the first time in
Pietermaritzburg and discussed a number of issues relating to the relationship
between government and the media in the province.

The meeting also agreed to continue the dialogue as they both accounted to
the same public.

At the same meeting, the Cabinet noted the devastation left behind by a
combination of drought and the recent veld fires in the province. The fires
resulted in the deaths of 13 people and hundreds of millions of rands' worth of
damage to property and animals. Proper costing of the devastation would soon be
finalised after which the provincial government will assess if a disaster would
have to be declared in the province.

An appeal was made for donations to help those who were left destitute as a
result of the wild fires.

The Cabinet also thought there was a need to develop legislation that would
help speed up transformation at provincial level to deal with the emancipation
of both men and women across the board.
