Soccer Stadium
29 August 2007
The KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet received a report today (29 August 2007) on the
safety issues reported in the media and which arose out of a visit by the
Deputy Director-General of the Department of Labour on Monday (27 August 2007)
to the construction site of the Moses Mabhida Soccer Stadium in Durban.
Unfortunately media reports portrayed an incorrect impression that work on
the site had stopped, that the construction site was unsafe and that the
construction may not be completed on time. The construction of the Moses
Mabhida Stadium is well within the set completion time.
Cabinet has been reassured that all of the prohibition notices have been
withdrawn, no work on the site has been stopped and the Moses Mabhida Stadium
construction remains a flagship project of which the whole province is
proud.
Cabinet believes that while the safety of workers is paramount, we must
avoid sensationalising matters.
Cabinet received an assurance that both the contractors and the eThekwini
Municipality take safety very seriously. This is evidenced by the receipt of a
'highly commended' award from the Master Builder's Association for the safety
work being done at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Cabinet also supports the need to ensure observance of all occupational
health and safety laws in the construction of the stadium.
