The MEC for Health Mrs Peggy Nkonyeni, Head of Department Dr Busi Nyembezi
and the senior management have learnt with shock and great sadness about the
tragic death of a medical doctor from Tayler Bequest hospital in Matatiele,
this morning.
The 29 year-old doctor, whose identity cannot be revealed until her
next-of-kin have been informed, was killed when the car in which she and her
colleague, Dr Zola Biyela (49) were travelling in overturned on the N2 north,
next to the Park Rynie offramp. The two doctors were on their way to Durban to
attend a training course. Dr Biyela, a Senior Medical Officer and the driver of
the vehicle, Mr Eric Radebe, are in a critical condition at St. Augustine's
hospital in Durban.
The MEC for Health, Mrs Nkonyeni sends her heartfelt and deepest condolences
to the family of the deceased and wished Dr Biyela and Mr Radebe a speedy
recovery, "It is a real loss to the department, especially for people who have
dedicated their services in our rural facilities. It will take us a long time
to fill the gap that has been opened by the sudden death of this young doctor.
Our prayers are with her colleagues who are still receiving treatment at St
Augustine's hospital. May their families find strength to heal through this
difficult and trying moment," says the MEC.
