Food Day
16 October 2006
To enlist more support for and co-ordination in fighting poverty, the
Gauteng Provincial Government has invited local banks to the World Food Day
event to be held today
Mr Khabisi Mosunkutu, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and
Environment and Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, are expected
to officiate at this event. Major banks and other private sector role players,
including the Land Bank and Pick n'Pay, among others, are also expected to
utilise the occasion to outline their poverty alleviation investment
programmes. The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Tshwane University
of Technology (TUT) will also make presentations on poverty alleviation
strategies.
In his address, MEC Mosunkutu is expected to talk about his Department's
poverty alleviation programmes, including the recently launched hydroponics
incubator projects and the Homestead Food Garden programmes that have been
allocated more than R5 million for the 2006/07 financial year. These two
projects are elements of the broad Gauteng Agricultural Development Strategy -
a vehicle utilised by the Department to contribute towards the Provincial
strategic goals of fighting poverty and stimulating faster economic growth.
