Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi
Mosunkutu, will tomorrow officiate at the launch of the Gauteng chapter of the
Women in Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD), a vehicle to streamline
women empowerment in the agricultural sector.
WARD also dubbed Izinhlwathi, is an initiative spearheaded by the Minister
of Agriculture, Ms Lulu Xingwana. The primary objectives of WARD include among
others the promotion of women friendly agrarian and land reform programmes,
protection of the rights of women farm workers including their land tenure
rights. It also aims to streamline access by women to finances including from
the Micro Agricultural Finance Institution of South Africa (MAFISA), the
Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) and to other economic
empowerment and training opportunities.
The launch of the Gauteng chapter of WARD, taking place a few days before
the World Rural Women's Day, which is observed on 15 December, and during the
currency of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children,
is a sustainable project aimed at further broadening the frontiers of freedom
and human rights to more South African women.
