To celebrate World Veterinary Day and to further roll out the Gauteng
Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment's free veterinary
services, MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu will launch the Winterveld free veterinary
service programme. First launched in Sebokeng on 13 February 2007, the project
has benefited hundreds of community members who flocked daily to service
centres to have their animals treated. The purpose of the campaign is to lower
the incidence of animal diseases like rabies by ensuring wider veterinary
services coverage of the pet population.
This pet care campaign includes vaccination, de-worming, dipping and
sterilisation of pets. Sterilisation of animals is known to contribute to the
reduction of the number of stray animals. Sick stray animals heighten the risk
of the spread of animal-borne diseases such as rabies, a potentially lethal
disease that is communicable to human beings. This project is also expected to
increase awareness in communities regarding the management of parasites such as
tapeworm, which can be transmitted to people by fleas.
