12 February 2007
Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi
Mosunkutu, will launch a free veterinary service as part of the Pet Care
Campaign tomorrow.
The purpose of the campaign is to lower the incidence of animal diseases,
like rabies, by ensuring wider veterinary services coverage of the pet
population. The pet care campaign will include vaccination and sterilisation,
among others. Sterilisation is expected to also contribute to the reduction of
the number of stray animals. Stray animals not only significantly contribute to
the spread of rabies, they also contribute to the occurrence of road
accidents.
Treatment of internal and external parasites will create awareness in
communities regarding the management of parasites such as tapeworm, which can
be transmitted to people by fleas. Awareness will be continually created
through local community radio stations.
