Campaign
16 April 2007
The Gauteng Provincial Government will launch its 2007 multi-million rand
Bontle ke Botho Clean and Green campaign, a legacy of the 2002 World Summit on
Sustainable Development, on Tuesday, 17 April 2007.
Gauteng MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, Khabisi Mosunkutu
will officiate at the launch and is expected to highlight amongst others, the
modest contribution of the project to better improve management of the
environment, including its contribution to the negation of adverse climatic
changes that have assumed centre stage in environmental discussions across the
world.
The Bontle ke Botho campaign, in addition to raising awareness of
environmental issues also contributes to poverty alleviation and job creation.
Poverty alleviation projects initiated from the proceeds of the project include
the Mofolo Hydroponics Project which farms vegetables that are sold to the
local community. The Vusisizwe Garden Service project located in Ekurhuleni
recently won a sub-contract to maintain the lawn at the O R Tambo International
Airport and pays a regular income to its members.
The project has extended operations to include waste management, with eight
mini depots established as collection points within a municipal ward. Different
waste materials (papers, plastics, bottles and cans) are recovered for
recycling purposes. The project has also received infrastructure sponsorship of
R40 000 from the glass manufacturing company Consol.
