Gauteng MEC for Social Development Kgaogelo Lekgoro will tomorrow, Friday,
12 January 2007, hand out school uniforms at two Alexandra Schools.
Lekgoro will visit Emfundisweni Primary School and Ikage Primary School to
hand out uniforms to poor children. The uniforms are being distributed to
children who are starting school as part of the Bana Pele programme.
"We want to ease the burden of poor parents whose children are entering
school for the first time. We also want to contribute to a positive development
of children, in order to ensure that they receive uniforms, school nutrition,
scholar transport and free healthcare.
"The Bana Pele programme is an opportunity for us to help the children
receive government services through a single window," said Lekgoro.
Some of the uniforms distributed are part of the Skills and Entrepreneurship
Development Programmes funded by the Department of Social Development to
alleviate the plight of the poor.
"When the opportunity came to provide school uniforms to children we decided
to procure it from our development projects rather than going to the big stores
and buying uniforms," said Lekgoro.
The MEC already handed out uniforms to more than 500 beneficiaries in the
past two days. By the end of January uniforms shall have been issued to 18 000
beneficiaries. The package includes a pair of shoes, a pair of trousers for
boys and tunics for girls, a shirt, underwear and a school jersey with the
colours of the school.
